In this article we will discuss what cleaning products are suggested for routine maintenance and every day cleaning of ceramic and porcelain tile floors as well as natural stone floors like marble, travertine, limestone, slate, flagstone, terracotta and granite. In previous articles we already explained how to actually mop properly and prevent dirt accumulation on the floor and in the grout lines. In this article we will explain what cleaning products are effective, non effective or even harmful to your floor. A basic cleaning product for routine mopping is a neutral cleaner. Neutral means PH neutral or 7.0. The label of cleaning products state their ph and you should look for something that has a ph between 7-9. The benefit of a neutral cleaner is that it is not soapy and will not leave a film of residue if diluted properly like soapy cleaning products. This soapy residue is common of many detergents and cleaning products. This soap residue requires a lot of water to rinse it out (think dishes). Most people use insufficient water to properly rinse out this soap residue. This causes a haziness and distortion of clarity of the tile. Furthermore dirt tends to stick to this soap film creating a cleaning nightmare and perpetual dirty looking floor. Another benefit of a neutral cleaner is its mildness and inability to harm or cause damage to most surfaces including polished marble and natural stone. Many household cleaning products even 100% natural can totally ruin marble and other common stones like limestone and travertine. Vinegar is one classic example that would require professional marble refinishing and polishing. In...
In last post we discussed what is necessary to mop a tile floor properly (mopping 101). Now lets discuss how to mop. The goal of mopping is to remove the dirt from the tile floor. Most people just get the floor wet and then swish the water and all the dirt around pushing it all into the grout lines which are lower than the tiles. The grout ends up as the receptacle for all the dirt and dirty water from the entire floor. So while the tiles may have gotten clean the grout just got dirtier. Even worse is the fact that the grout is cement based and absorbs all that dirty water. Over time this causes the grout to become permanently stained and discolored just like clothing. What is crucial is to dry the dirty water before it has a chance to absorb in to the grout or simply evaporate. What you will find is a dirty towel instead of a dirty tile and grout floor. By mopping in sections and drying the water before you proceed to the next section of the tiles will be the most effective way of properly cleaning your tile floor and preventing dirty grout. It is important to note that a good quality grout seal can be very helpful in this regard. A grout sealer will prevent absorption of that dirty water into the grout. This will give you that window of time to dry the dirty water before it is too late and already absorbed and stained your grout. It goes without saying that the mopping water in a bucket must...
In this picture we worked on a marble floor with a winding staircase in Lakewood NJ. The floor was pretty dull and no longer had much shine. The installation of 3 marbles crema marfil, Rojo Alocante and Brown Emperador posed an issue. Numerous edges had to be done by hand to finish the floor in a uniform matter. First we diamond honed the floor to remove any spots or imperfections Afterward we use polishing compounds to create that high shine. Marble, Travertine & Limestone as well as other natural stones require proper maintenance. Usage of cleaning products that are compatible with natural stone is very important. Just because a product is all natural or “green” does not mean it is suitable for marble, limestone or travertine. In fact vinegar is extremely harmful for use on calcite stones such as marble, limestone and travertine They also require professional refinishing occasionally by a Professional Natural Stone Restoration company since these stones are soft and scratch easily. The first step in professional restoration is to hone the stone with diamonds to remove scratches and marks. After that the stone could be polished with polishing compounds just like the factory to produce a shine from the stone itself. Some stones look nicer unpolished with a more natural matted look which is called a “honed finish” Stones like travertine and limestone and sometimes marble as well will be in a honed finish as opposed to a polish finish. We offer to polish or hone the stone as well as various customized finishes like a muted polish or a high hone where there is a subtle shine. Many of our customers ask to have their stone sealed. However generally they do not realize the limitations of a sealer. In fact a sealer only helps prevent colored stains on stone not the more common etches from improper cleaning products or scratches. We do offer to seal marble, travertine and limestone when necessary but educate our customers on the benefits and limitations of sealers and sealing natural stone. Many times we get phone calls to clean marble or travertine. Usually the issue is...

Dark tile flooring is very popular nowadays. Dark brown, gray or charcoal porcelain tiles are very common for new kitchen flooring. Wood look tiles that come in various size planks are among the most popular of all tile floor types today. Generally dark grout to blend with the dark tiles is installed. However fairly common to the dismay of the homeowner is a discoloration or lightening of the grout color. This can really change the look of the floor tiles for the worse. There are a number of reasons why the grout color is not correct. In this article we will focus on one of the most common reasons which is construction dust. White dust that comes from construction like sheet rock can accumulate in the air and on the floor during construction. Since generally grout is absorbent especially sanded grout the color from the white dust can bleed in to the grout and ruin the dark color. Especially new grout that is wet can absorb light colored dust from construction. When a color actually bleeds in to the grout it is nearly impossible to clean it out. Grout Works of Central NJ in addition to specializing in cleaning grout has a unique technique to actually ensure that all the grout has a uniform color and that the color matches the tile as it was supposed to. Not only that, even if you mistakenly chose the wrong grout color we can generally change and customize the grout colors to exactly the color you wish. So whether you chose the wrong color grout or it was stained lighter by construction dust we can restore...
