Travertine Flooring has been quite popular in recent years. In the many upscale homes that Grout Works has serviced in the monmouth & mercer county area such as in Colts neck & Princeton we have seen many variations of travertine. Travertine comes in various sizes colors and grades. Some have many unfilled holes while some have surfaces that require no fill. In general travertine is a soft stone like limestone so it does scratch easily. However it can also be refinished with diamonds more easily than other stones like harder marbles due to its softness. Travertine can be polished or have a honed finish. Honed finishes tend to hide scratches and imperfections making it more practical for an area that is used more. Many times travertine will also look nicer with a honed finish as opposed to a polished finish due to the factory fill typically found in travertine. Typically we will show our customers some samples of different finishes on their travertine floor or other surface like a shower, vanity or table to see what their preferences are. We can then restore their travertine surface to their liking. For more information you can check out our natural stone care page or just give us a...

Did you know grout color can be changed for your tile floor or wall without removing your grout ? We have a sophisticated process where we can apply a Color Seal to the grout lines which can change a grout color immediately to the desired color. We can actually customize any color you would like for your grout. We have changed grey grout to white and white grout to charcoal. We have done exotic and non typical colors as well like a deep blue or purple as well as a deep green and lavender. Some tiles today like disney blue terrazzo just look so much nicer when the matching color grout makes the grout lines blend in seamlessly. Besides the grout color change a color seal also seals grout and makes grout cleaning much easier since the grout will now not absorb. It will render grout stain proof. So if you are in NJ especially in monmouth, mercer or ocean county or sometimes further call us for more...
Many people believe that all marble and natural stone needs to be sealed. However this is completely false. The reason for this assumption is because people understand that natural stone such as marble, travertine, limestone, granite, slate and other natural stones need special care and they assume this simply means it has to be sealed periodically. The truth is a number of things are necessary to care properly for natural stone and sealing it is sometimes very helpful, sometimes unnecessary and sometimes harmful. Other factors like cleaning methods, environment and occasional professional refinishing & polishing all come in to play in maintaining marble and natural stone surfaces like floors, countertops, showers and vanities. The reason to seal marble or limestone is to prevent staining. Staining is when something of color spills on a surface and it penetrates the surface with an indelible color. A seal acts to fill the pores of porous stone so it will not stain in the event of a spill. Some stones do absorb however many typical polished marbles do not absorb and do not need to be sealed to prevent staining. Many limestones on the other hand are extremely porous and will stain easily without a few coats of a good penetrating sealer. The best way of knowing whether your marble, travertine, limestone or slate needs to be sealed is by testing it. Leave some water on the surface for a while. Does it get absorbed in or does it stay on top of the stone ? In the coming articles we will discuss proper natural stone & marble cleaning as well as other...
