This past week we went to Long beach island NJ to service various stone surfaces. This beachfront home had a number of bathrooms with marble vanities. In addition there was some light granite counters, honed limestone as well as a beautiful marble island in the kitchen that was sold as quartzite but in reality was really marble. We sealed the limestone and granite and polished the marble. The main concern was the round etch mark prominently seen on the marble island. Wine had spilled on it and the bottom of the cup made the mark from the wine. The home owner tried to wipe it up immediately to no avail. They tried various cleaning products and rough brushes to attempt to remove it. They even lightly sanded it. They just made it worse by trying various diy methods they probably read somewhere online…The proper way to restore it is to use wet diamonds in a progression of grits and to use a polishing compound to produce a high shine just liked the original factory finish. Sometimes a good powder polish can restore marble and remove the etch mark without diamonds. In this case (see picture) we were able to remove the mark without diamonds just by polishing the marble. Many people think these marks are stains. The reality is they are not stains rather an etch or dulling of the marble’s finish. Stain removal kits will not remove this rather it requires professional marble restoration to restore the original finish. Finally we polished two cararra marble vanity tops in the bathrooms and did some caulk repair and left after a full day of work.
