There is a sea of information on the web and sometimes a good article is necessary to clarify many misconceptions and information promoted that many times is not completely accurate. The common sense and logic of this article which is based on much experience in the field will resonate its truth to all that read it. Myth # 1 Showers should be regrouted annually. That is totally false. A properly installed shower that is maintained properly should not need to be regrouted for many years possibly not even the entire life of the shower. The need to regrout arises when one of these 2 things did not happen and at that point a professional grout repair service company should be able to identify what happened and why there is a need to regrout and what steps are necessary to make sure that the problem in this shower does not arise again. Myth # 2 Caulk gets moldy and either needs to be replaced annually or grout is a better alternative or only mold resistant caulk will work. That is totally false. No matter how good quality caulk is if water gets behind it and trapped it will get moldy ! If water does not get behind it and the caulk is suitable for a shower like a good brand of 100% silicone caulk it should last for many years. The main reason caulk gets moldy is because it is not proper caulk for a shower or moisture is trapped behind it. A true grout restoration professional will not band aid a shower with caulk rather will identify the underlying issues and resolve them first. In future articles I hope to cover more details in understanding how to maintain a shower properly. Signs to look out for to prevent bigger issues. If a grout sealer in a shower is a necessity or just an extra.
