Diamond Honing is the classic way to refinish marble floors and other natural stone surfaces such as limestone and travertine. What creates the beautiful finish whether its a honed natural look or a shiny polished appearance is not some sort of coating on the surface by the factory. Rather the formation of the molecules on the stone’s surface create the appearance and finish of the stone. When the molecules are more spread apart then the surface is slightly rougher and the appearance is a more matted honed look. When the molecules are very tightly packed then the surface is much smoother and has a glass like shine. Various diamond grits as well as polishing compounds can produce the desired finish by combining friction, abrasives and chemical reactions. The same way the factory can produce various finishes on each type of stone a stone restoration professional can do the same on a surface already installed. Additionally, once installed the stone floor can be ground in place creating a perfectly level floor with no lips uneveness or imperfections. Many times there are various stones in a floor. Sometimes there can be a mix of a carrara marble along with some nina marquina inlays. Sometimes a partial honed partial polished floor can accentuate the whole room.
