Why does grout get so dirty ? Grout lines are generally lower than the tiles. Due to this dirt can get stuck in it. While washing a tile floor in your kitchen, foyer or bathroom you may not even clean the grout at all. Even worse, you may be pushing the dirt from the tile floor into the grout lines. But it really goes further than that. Once dirt collects on the grout it will not remain on the surface. Grout is porous and will absorb the dirt and filth fairly quickly. Then you are left with stained grout. It is much more difficult to clean stained grout and it loses that clean fresh new look. The solution is two fold. First of all if you seal your grout properly it will not stain as easily or as bad. with a Grout Works Color Seal it will not stain at all. Second of all you must clean the tile floor in a proper fashion. In future posts we will discuss the proper method for cleaning tile and grout properly. Click here to check out our gallery. Marble, Travertine & Limestone are natural stones that require proper maintenance. They also require professional refinishing occasionally by a Professional Natural Stone Restoration company. Since these stones are soft they can scratch easily. The first step in professional restoration is to hone the stone with diamonds to remove scratches and marks. After that the stone could be polished with polishing compounds just like the factory to produce a shine from the stone itself. Some stones look nicer unpolished with a more natural matted look which is called a “honed finish” Stones like travertine and limestone and sometimes marble as well will be in a honed finish as opposed to a polish finish. We offer to polish or hone the stone as well as various customized finishes like a muted polish or a high hone where there is a subtle shine. Many customers ask to have their stone sealed. However generally they do not realize the limitations of a sealer. In fact a sealer only helps prevent colored stains on stone not the more common etches from improper cleaning products or scratches. We do offer to seal marble, travertine and limestone when necessary but educate our customers on the benefits and limitations of sealers and sealing natural stone. Many times we get phone calls to clean marble or travertine. Usually the issue is not dirt rather the surface needs to be refinished. Sometimes it is very dirty but that also is many times due to the fact that the surface of the stone like a travertine floor has been worn to the point where it does not have a smooth finish anymore...
This marble polishing job we recently completed was a crema marfil marble floor in a South Brunswick NJ residence that had scuffed up areas in the marble foyer due to construction. Notice the huge contrast in these before and after pics and how before there is obvious scuffs in the marble mosaic medallion which actually contained granite inlays as well. Marble loses its shine due to wear from scratches and marks as well as spills and improper cleaning products that are not suitable for marble. This causes it to etch and leave dull spots and marks. Many people think that these marks are stains in the marble or stone. In reality they are not stains rather just a thin layer of the marble surface was removed by the improper cleaning product. A natural stone restoration professional can restore this by refinishing with diamonds otherwise known as honing and polishing to a high sheen. Many glamorous halls and buildings have highly polished marble floors. Many times it is terrazzo which has no grout joints separating it. This has a sleek appearance that spreads like glass. Even with grout lines if they are thin and the grout color matches to blend properly it can have a similiar effect. Color sealing grout can achieve this by customizing the grout color desired without the need to remove or change grout. Furthermore this will enable easier maintenance by rendering the grout stain proof. Check out our marble & natural stone page for more information about diamond honing marble and powder polishing...
Many times in New Construction Homes the post construction cleanup does not suffice. When all the debris is cleared and the dust settles it just uncovers what is there to stay….Hopefully it is not too bad but sometimes it is. Grout Works of Central NJ is called upon in many instances by contractors, builders and others involved in the m process to resolve some of these issues. Restoring the proper grout color that will just not come clean is one common thing. Restoring marble can get scratched up from workers one and marble flooring and surfaces is another common one. Many times tools can drop on the marble or construction materials are dragged on it. All these scratches and scuffs ruin the shine and polish of the marble finish. In short, it seems quite easy to ruin a floor. Check out these before and after pics of a beautiful custom home foyer. Notice in the before picture the sanded spots on the mosaic medallion. We often get calls from homeowners, contractors, builders and tile installers that there was a problem with the grout in the tile installation. One of the most common issues is that the grout color is too light and was supposed to be a darker color like gray or brown not white. There are a number of reasons why this can occur. 1. The wrong color was chosen or the wrong grout was installed. Many times grout sample charts appear darker than the actual grout color. Keep this in mind when choosing grout colors. 2. Due to construction dust from sheetrock and other materials very often all that dust settles on the tile floor and can bleed into the grout color especially when the grout is wet. Very often its impossible to restore the grout color just by cleaning alone. 3. If darker grouts are not mixed well or are sponged with too much water this can create an inconsistent color since there are varying concentrations of dye in the grout as a result. 4. If the thinset is a much lighter color sometimes is can show through the grout and make it appear lighter if there is not sufficient grout on top. At Grout Works we have a cutting edge solution that can change the grout color to the exact color you want. Rather than regrouting which entails removing the existing grout and putting in new grout we can change the color of the existing grout. We only resort to removing grout and regrouting when the condition and integrity of the grout seems compromised, otherwise we risk chipping the edges of...
