Regrouting commercial kitchen floors is a common request we receive. Due to the heat and grease many times the grout will come apart especially near the fryers. Many places want epoxy grout installed due to its higher durability. However quickly retract that once the price tag for epoxy grout becomes apparent. Although many corporate requests are for laticrete spectralock epoxy grout in truth only the industrial grade epoxy grout is recommended for commercial kitchens not the regular spectralock epoxy. Another issue is the longer cure time and drying time for the grout lines which means down time for a commercial kitchen and lost business. One option we offer is a specific rapid set polymer modified grout which is a much higher performance grout than regular sanded grout. An even bigger benefit is that it dries within hours. However there is no question that 100% solids epoxy grout will outperform any other grout. However there is a third option which I believe is overlooked by many and in truth I believe is the best option of all. That option is like an epoxy quartz overlay or a urethane concrete overlay. An existing quarry tile floor (which is the typical tile floor in an industrial kitchen) can be properly prepped and then a thin poured floor can be put right on top. This can be made from materials like epoxy and stone that will outlast any quarry tile floor. It dries quickly and requires very little down time. It can withstand the high heat of fryers and chemicals from cleaning. It is also a textured surface that is not slippery even when wet. On the other hand it is much easier to keep clean since there are no grout lines and it is all one seamless surface. See the above close up picture for an example of one particular stone and epoxy finish. This can be done in multiple shades and colors as well.
