The question we get asked a lot is if grout sealing is recommended. We get asked this question in a number of ways.
1. Does grout need to be sealed ?
2. Why should grout be sealed ?
3. What does a grout seal do ?
4. What should be used to seal grout ?
5. My friend told me she had her grout sealed and it did not work ?
6. How often should grout be resealed ?
7. I read online conflicting things about the effectiveness of sealing grout ?
I will answer each question one by one.
1. Grout does not NEED to be sealed but it is recommended.
2. Grout should be sealed to prevent absorbtion. This will make it easier to keep clean since it will not get stained as easily from spills or dirty mop water.
It also can prolong the life of the grout especially in a wet environment like a shower where a seal will allow little to no water to penetrate.
3. A seal prevents or minimizes absorbancy of liquids into the grout which is naturally porous.
4. There are many sealers available. We find that a color seal is the ultimate in regards to grout sealing and stain prevention. There are penetrating sealers that are used for grout. The better quality ones are more expensive and it must be applied properly to provide any effectiveness.
5. Many times sealers are poor quality or the application method was not right and therefore many times a grout seal will not be effective.
6. If you find that the grout is absorbing and taking in liquid you need reseal.
7. It is very difficult to rely on online content since many times companies have agendas and many comments are not from knowledgeable sources.
