Commercial tile and grout cleaning services can present different challenges than residential grout cleaning. We recently completed a kitchen tile floor job and marble foyer in Holmdel NJ. The holmdel homeowners were looking to sell their house and move to Colts Neck NJ. The white tile floor in the kitchen with the darkened grout lines was definitely not a way to present their home to potential homebuyers. Additionally the marble foyer had not been polished in a number of years and a complete refinishing including honing and polishing the marble was definitely in order. To insure the kitchen grout was uniform and totally the right uniform color we opted to clean the grout first followed by a color seal. We also patched the grout in a number of places that the grout had cracked or chipped out. Check out the beautiful results in these before and after pictures of this beautiful tile floor in Holmdel...
Just the other day we were in Rumson to check out the tile and grout in a shower. It turns out the issue was with moldy caulk and not with the tile and grout. It seemed to be just some moldy caulk that needed to be recaulked. However it turned out to be a larger issue. After the caulk was removed there was visible water and moisture in the seam between the shower wall and the shower floor. This seem to indicate a bigger problem. Since all the grout on the wall seemed intact is indicated that the water was coming from under the shower floor from the pan underneath the tiles. To properly resolve this issue there were two options. One was to rip out the shower floor. The second optiion was to leave a seam opened to allow the water to dry out properly. The next time we would be in Rumson we would check the moisture reading and upon proper drying we could complete the repair on this Rumson shower. Take a look at this beautiful honed travertine floor. Travertine is a soft stone, scratches easily and shows imperfections. By diamond honing the stone it will remove and refinish marks, stains and scratches. The finish of travertine can be anything from a rough hone with a rustic antique natural look to a highly polished glossy shine. The benefits of polished travertine is that the surface is less absorbent and easier to clean. The cons of polished travertine is that as in any polished floor like marble it will not hide the imperfections, scratches, etch marks and stains like a honed finish will. Over time as imperfections and marks appear it will not be as obvious on a honed finish as much as on a polished finish. Many times travertine does not need to be sealed. Sometimes it can even be detrimental to the look of the stone and cause the clarity of the stone to become hazy. In another article we will discuss more information about sealing travertine and other natural stones. Check out our natural stone services...
Cleaning Natural Stone requires more care than cleaning regular porcelain or ceramic tile and grout. First of all the cleaning products must be suitable for natural stone or the stone can get ruined. Polished marble will definitely display dull spots and etch marks if an unsuitable cleaner is used. However even honed finish stones like limestone and travertine will look hazy and uneven if cleaned improperly. Furthermore many stones like limestone, travertine and marble are soft and scratch easily. The aggressive scrubbing and stiff brushes used to clean regular tile and grout can possibly scratch and ruin the stones. Experience and expertise are a must when cleaning natural stone. Many times natural stones do not need a cleaning as cleaning would be ineffective or insufficient. Rather the stone needs to be refinished and a complete restoration. Whether a marble shower or travertine foyer floor or a limestone kitchen floor, it will need to be refinished and honed with diamonds periodically. Did you know excessively cleaning and brushing grout can ruin your grout ? Especially if abrasive or compounds that wear away grout can expedite its demise and need for grout repair. A soft brush with a regular floor cleaning product on occasion is ok. On rare occasions chemicals can be used to deep clean tile and grout. However it should be rinsed and dried well afterward to insure the grout does not get ruined if it lingers. Be aware that acidic cleaners clean grout more effectively. However household acids like vinegar can ruin and dull polished marble or other natural stones like travertine and limestone. When grout is sealed properly the sealed grout is easier to clean and maintain without causing loose or cracked grout. The premium grout sealers are called color sealers and require a professional experienced with color sealing grout. This will insure the proper grout sealing as well as the use of a quality grout color...
