Sometimes people think they can buy some grout pen and just color or paint their grout lines. Unfortunately, either the results fall far short of their expectations or the process is much more difficult than they anticipated. Even if all goes well many times people unknowingly wear down and ruin the binders of their grout. As a result the grout begins to start breaking down and overtime start to crack or crumble. Skilled and meticulous professionals are necessary to properly restore natural stone like marble, limestone, travertine, granite, quartz, quartzite, onyx, terracotta, slate, flagstone and other natural stones. Proper refinishing is an art and can be done a variety of methods depending on the type of restoration necessary and the type of stone. Methods can vary from using diamond grits to polishing compounds to proper fills and sometimes various chemicals to remove coatings. Refinishing can produce various finishes both matte and natural appearances commonly referred to as honed. Another method of refinishing can produce a polished finish and high shine. A natural stone professional can customize the desired finish according to the taste of the customer and decor of their home. In this picture a dull spot occurred on the marble counter top in the kitchen of this beachfront home in Long Beach Island NJ. Some wine had spilled on the counter and caused an etched mark which looked like a ring mark or water mark on the counter. Since the island was subject to sunlight streaming in through the window the mark was very noticeable and disturbed the homeowners greatly. In this case we were able to hand polish the counter in just those areas and match the finish to the rest of the counter. However sometimes more work can be necessary. Grout Works of Central NJ specializes in restoring all types of stone as well as grout cleaning, stone and grout sealing, grout color changes and repairs. Many people are unaware that a grout color can literally make a floor look gorgeous or look horrible. A wrong grout color whether chosen by mistake or just did not come out right can really diminish the beauty of a tile floor. Sometimes in new construction homes the grout color can come out too light due to the abundance of white dust in the air from sanding and cuttting construction materials. Sheetrock dust can whiten grout especially a dark color grout and it is impossible to restore the original grout color just by cleaning. Even if a floor started out with the perfect grout color as it gets dirty can make a beautiful tile floor look awful due to the discoloration of the grout lines. On the other hand even a simple tile floor can look very sharp and have a beautiful flow to it if the grout color looks good. In these pictures we cleaned, sealed and color modified a very simple old ceramic tile floor in Middletown NJ not far from Little Silver. Notice how before the floor has no appeal. Afterward the floor has a flow and looks real nice. In next article we will discuss in more detail why grout color has such an effect and how we can restore a grout color even when it cannot be restored by cleaning alone. Grout Works of Central New Jersey services Monmouth County and the NJ Shore including areas around the Navesink river as well including Rumson, Little Silver, Fair Haven, Lincroft, Red Bank, Middletown, Holmdel, Oceanport, Monmouth Beach and most of NJ. Generally Natural Stone like marble can usually be restored to look beautiful. Unlike man made porcelain or ceramic tiles which have factory finishes, colors and designs placed on the tile surface natural stone is the same from top to bottom. So even if the surface gets ruined it can be resurfaced and restored. The way this is done is done is just like how factories produce the various finishes you find of stone in stores. When marble is pulled out of a quarry in the ground it does not look like it does on a store shelf. The fabrication process in factories uses diamond abrasives, water and various polishing compounds which produce various types of finishes. This process can be replicated on the natural stone surface in your home or business. Professional Stone Restoration Companies use machines with diamonds to remove the surface imperfections of the stone due to wear. Then the stone can be restored to its original finish or the finish can even be changed. Finishes can range from low hone or a rustic more natural appearance a high shine polished finish. Common stones that are generally used for interiors include, marble, limestone, terrracotta, travertine, granite, slate,...
This past week we just completed a job in Far Hills NJ. We worked on the porcelain tile floors in 2 bathrooms and the floor of the side entrance. We also worked on the master bathroom and master bath shower floors which were botticino marble. The porcelain floors were more simple. We primarily focused on cleaning the grout lines and sealing them. Afterward we buffed the entire floor and the results were awesome. The tile floor looked brand new ! Marble is always more complex. First we refinished the marble with diamonds to remove any marks and wear from the surface of the marble. This process is called diamond honing. This process is the way a factory takes a raw stone from a quarry like marble and creates the finished look that you see in the stores for purchase, This process can produce various finishes from a natural look “low hone” to a satin finish a “high hone” or a polished finish with a crystal clear reflection. In this case we asked the customer her preference and she chose a low hone a more natural finish. After completing the honing process on the marble we cleaned the grout lines. We waited for the floor to dry and then we sealed the marble as well as the grout with a water based penetrating impregnating sealer. Take a look at the before and after pictures.
